The Accountant 2

Starring:  Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal Directed by:

Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) has a talent for solving complex problems. When an old acquaintance is murdered, leaving behind a cryptic message to “find the accountant,” Wolff is compelled to solve the case. Realizing more extreme measures are necessary, Wolff recruits his estranged and highly lethal brother, Brax (Jon Bernthal), to help. In partnership with U.S. Treasury Deputy Director Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), they uncover a deadly conspiracy, becoming targets of a ruthless network of killers who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets buried.

Critics:

While the sequel is worse off for the absence of original costars Anna Kendrick, John Lithgow, Jeffrey Tambor and Jean Smart, the easy back-and-forth chemistry between Affleck and Bernthal as they paint the town blood-red provides certain dividends.

– Barry Hertz, Globe and Mail

Affleck does a fine job, but what makes “The Accountant 2” better than it should be is Bernthal, a roguish charmer who can talk calmly, with just a trace of menace, even though he’s been responsible for a pile of bloodied corpses.

The Legend of Ochi

Starring: Finn Wolfhard, Willem Dafoe,  Directed by:   Isaiah Saxon

In a remote village on the island of Carpathia, a shy farm girl named Yuri is raised to fear an elusive animal species known as ochi. But when Yuri discovers a wounded baby ochi has been left behind, she escapes on a quest to bring him home.

Critics:

A film that tells its own tale, rather than the one it thinks you want to hear, this one has a touch of madness to it, and it seems fashioned from love and old parts for people who genuinely don’t want to know what’s going to happen next.

– Ty Burr, Washington Post

The Legend of Ochi is light on story — you kind of know what’s going to happen all the time — and that, coupled with occasionally garbled dialogue, makes it easy to zone out at times. But in its place it serves up a nourishing banquet for the senses.

Muriel and her husband Lee are beginning a bright new life in California when he returns from the Korean War. But their newfound stability is upended by the arrival of Lee’s charismatic brother, Julius, a wayward gambler with a secret past. A dangerous love triangle quickly forms. When Julius takes off in search of the young card cheat he’s fallen for, Muriel’s longing for something more propels her into a secret life of her own, gambling on racehorses and exploring a love she never dreamed possible.

Critics:

Nobody in this movie would be out of place in a glamorous old-Hollywood drama, which is kind of what “On Swift Horses” is trying to be — and, most of the time, coming pretty close.

– Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times

It can feel a bit diagrammatic, as if the novelist were setting up impossible loves and then watching them fail. But there’s hope too, and… there’s poetry in watching someone betting their future on yet another horse.
