Texas residents cannot cite Covid-19 as a valid reason to be able to vote by mail. In the midst of a global pandemic, it’s critical that voter empowerment and civic engagement efforts are supported to ensure that voters have safe access to voting and their voices are heard in this election.
The virtual fundraiser supports March For Science’s #VoteForScience campaign, mobilizing the science advocacy community to vote in this election as well as educating voters on how they can vote in-person and safely.
“Now more than ever, we need science-informed policies and practices to protect the public and defend our democracy,” said Matt Tranchin, President of March For Science.
“As a Texan who is not allowed to vote by mail during a pandemic because of our state’s short-sighted election laws, it’s a powerful reminder that we need elected representatives who will embrace science and listen to public health officials.”
Funds raised will also support Voto Latino Foundation, which is registering Latinx voters and encouraging civic participation so that Latinx voices can be heard. This work focuses on educating voters on the issues that affect their communities, engaging and mobilizing Latinx people across the country, and empowering them to turn out and make their voices heard.
“With a pandemic raging during an election year, this country should be investing in every possible measure to keep voters safe,” said Danny Friedman, Managing Director of Voto Latino. “No one should be forced to choose between their health and their vote. Unfortunately, the state of Texas does not allow COVID-19 to be used as a reason for mail-in voting. Voto Latino Foundation has registered 215,964 voters in Texas, and each one of them will be making their voices heard in November, despite the state’s intransigence.”
