Honorary Award recipient David Lynch at the 2019 Governors Awards in The Ray Dolby Ballroom on Sunday, October 27, 2019, in Hollywood, CA.

DAVID LYNCH (1946 – 2025)

I have two stories about David Lynch that are favorites of mine from when he came to the AFI DALLAS Film Festival in 2007 to be honored with the DALLAS STAR Award and to screen INLAND EMPIRE.

Here we go…

David Lynch RIP Films Gone Wild

STORY #1
We were doing a post screening Q&A and it was long (40 minutes or so). The movie itself was long, so I decide to wrap it up (I was in the audience choosing who got to ask questions.) So, I choose the last person, and this guy stands up and asks, “What are your thoughts on the color blue?” As anyone who moderates Q&As, my first thought was a familiar one (“Damn it, I went one person too many.”) and then, (“Maybe I can quickly pull this guy out of the audience, throw him out of the there and no one will notice.”)

But David Lynch replies, “I have been thinking a lot about the color blue recently. It’s not indigo, and it’s not violet, but…” and he continued for awhile.

Because of course he did.

STORY #2
Since we had him here in-person for the film festival, we also seized upon the opportunity to interview him on camera for the film festival’s website and You Tube page. It was a very thoughtful and entertaining interview (by Joe Huang) but at the end of the interview he was asked his thoughts about product placement in films. His response gave us our first “viral” moment online.
