I Know What You Did Last Summer

I Know What You Did Last Summer

Starring: Madelyn Cline, Freddie Prinze Jr., Jennifer Love Hewitt  ; Directed by: Jennifer Kaytin Robinson

Synopsis:

When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences. A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer… and is hell-bent on revenge. As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.

Critics:

“The higher body count and a new cast of genuinely likable characters help introduce this legacy sequel to new audiences, but it’s one that’s best suited and tailor-made for the die-hard IKWYDLS fan.”

Meagan Navarro, Bloody Disgusting

“The movie does not earn the right for such an insincere have-your-I-Heart-the-’90s-cake-and-eat-it-too gesture. It barely earns the right to a theatrical release. This is the kind of I.P. cash-in that earns franchise resuscitations a bad name.”

Smurfs

Starring: John Goodman, Rihanna  ; Directed by: Chris Miller

Synopsis:

When Papa Smurf (John Goodman) is mysteriously taken by evil wizards, Razamel and Gargamel, Smurfette (Rihanna) leads the Smurfs on a mission into the real world to save him. With the help of new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny to save the universe.

Critics:

“Caught between its cynical approaches to bygone zeitgeists, Smurfs can’t decide how it wants to sell out.”

Jacob Oller, AV Club

“You can almost feel IP-rights pressures animating the entire enterprise. See, there are other Smurf names out there. What about Corporate Mandate Smurf?”

Jake Coyle, Associated Press

“It’s refreshing to see children’s animation makers use surrealism, instead of winking pop-culture references, to charm adults.”

Eddington
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal

Eddington

Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal; Directed by: Ari Aster

Synopsis:

In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and mayor (Pedro Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.

Critics:

The movie is nasty and cynical — and also eerily accurate in its rendering of the digital reality of pandemic life.

Shirley Li, The Atlantic

Ari Aster’s “Eddington” is such a superb social satire about contemporary America that I want to bury it in the desert for 20 years. More distance will make it easier to laugh.

Finally Dawn

Starring: Lily James, Willem Dafoe, Joe Keery ; Directed by: Saverio Costanzo

Synopsis:

A young Roman woman during the 1950s is on the verge of becoming engaged to a man. She goes to Cinecittà to do an audition as an extra and is thrust into this almost infinite night during which she discovers herself.

Critics:

“Saverio Costanzo seems to throw more and more ideas at the page with the growing desperation of adding new toppings to mask a bad pizza.”

Steph Green, IndieWire

“The performers in “Finally Dawn” are its weakest feature: big and broad, prone to pantomime, clashing with whatever it is their colleagues are doing.”
