Next Wednesday is the DEADLINE for the Cucalorus Film Foundation Filmmaking Grants for North Carolina

Applications are due next Wednesday for the 2020 Filmed in NC Fund. This initiative of the Cucalorus Film Foundation is made possible through a partnership with the NC Film Office and by a gift from Artless Media in conjunction with The Magnifying Glass. The fund encourages the creation of independent film and video projects by artists who are permanent residents of North Carolina or who are full-time students at college or universities in North Carolina.

The program will fund projects by emerging and established artists producing singular and original new works. Additionally, projects should exhibit meaningful community impact and generate substantial economic activity in North Carolina. Projects at various stages of production (existing and new projects) are eligible to apply. The program supports narrative, doc and experimental films. Funding is prioritized for female filmmakers and African American and Latinx artists.

ALWAYS IN SEASON

2016 grant recipient Jacqueline Olive recently won the Special Jury Award for Moral Urgency at Sundance Film Festival 2019 for her film Always in Season, a documentary exploring how the trauma of more than a century of lynching African Americans bleeds into the present.

BLACK BEACH/WHITE BEACH: A TALE OF TWO BEACHES

Recipient Ricky Kelly presented his film Black Beach/White Beach: A Tale of Two Beaches at the 23rd annual Cucalorus Festival in November 2017. The film drew so many people to its world premiere that it received a coveted second screening. Distributor Gravitas Ventures offered Kelly a distribution deal following the screenings.

According to Cucalorus Film Foundation Executive Director Dan Brawley, “The Filmed in NC program holds so many of the values that Cucalorus champions. From celebrating emerging artists to building a sustainable film industry in our state, this program supports filmmakers in North Carolina starting from the ground up. There are so many talented people making films in our state and we know that funding is really the key to creating a healthy ecosystem.”

Funding ranges from $500 to $3,000 per project. The Fund is intended to support the development and production of new and ongoing projects with total budgets under $250,000. To learn more and submit your idea, visit http://www.cucalorus.org/programs/filmedinnc. Grant recipients will be announced in March 2019.
