Holland
Starring: Nicole Kidman, Matthew Macfadyen, Gael García Bernal, Jude Hill Directed by: Mimi Cave
In this wildly unpredictable thriller, Nicole Kidman is the meticulous Nancy Vandergroot, a teacher and homemaker whose picture-perfect life with her community pillar husband (Matthew Macfadyen) and son (Jude Hill) in tulip-filled Holland, Michigan tumbles into a twisted tale. Nancy and her friendly colleague (Gael García Bernal) become suspicious of a secret, only to discover nothing in their lives is what it seems.
Critic Reviews:
Unfortunately, Andrew Sodroski’s script does her no favors, sending the film off in another direction, one that isn’t earned. The second half of this savage take on Midwestern normalcy is nonsensical and at times ridiculously embarrassing.
– G. Allen Johnson, San Francisco Chronicle
Although Holland takes place in a unique setting full of kitschy Midwestern details, even Nicole Kidman in frustrated-housewife mode can’t sustain the sloppily plotted thriller.

Ex-Husbands
Starring: Griffin Dunne, Rosanna Arquette Directed by: Noah Pritzker
Manhattan dentist Peter Pearce (Griffin Dunne) is facing a midlife crisis after his wife of 35 years (Rosanna Arquette) leaves him. On the spur of the moment, he books a trip to Tulum, Mexico, only to crash his son’s bachelor party.
Critic Reviews:
It doesn’t pretend to offer solutions to the various predicaments it considers. But Mr. Pritzker has a sagacious understanding of our various stumbles and humiliations.
– Kyle Smith, Wall Street Journal
An interesting, intergenerational snapshot of masculine emotional drift in the modern world. What may strike some as lightweight will connect with attuned viewers as a compassionately observed collection of just-so moments—a worthwhile cinematic novella.
– Brent Simon, AV Club
Likable enough in intention, but flounders en route to its destination. Not unlike its befuddled protagonists, who can’t seem to translate meaning well into doing well.
– Jessica Kiang, Variety
