How to Train Your Dragon

Starring: Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler ; Directed by: Dean DeBlois

Synopsis:

On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Mason Thames; The Black Phone, For All Mankind) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society. With the fierce and ambitious Astrid (BAFTA nominee Nico Parker; Dumbo, The Last of Us) and the village’s quirky blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost; Snow White and the Huntsman, Shaun of the Dead) by his side, Hiccup confronts a world torn by fear and misunderstanding. As an ancient threat emerges, endangering both Vikings and dragons, Hiccup’s friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future. Together, they must navigate the delicate path toward peace, soaring beyond the boundaries of their worlds and redefining what it means to be a hero and a leader.

Critics say:

Toothless is as charismatic as ever; the flying sequences and natural landscapes are appropriately breathtaking, and if the film is overly enamored of lesser dragons belching fire at incoherently bellowing Norsemen, well, so was the original.

Bob Mondello, NPR

Is writer-director Dean DeBlois being consistent or just lazy? The question should keep him awake nights, staring at the dark sky in search of fresh dragons and wondering why he can’t do better than the cartoons he commanded earlier.

The Materialists

The Materialists

Starring: Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal ; Directed by: Celine Song

Synopsis:

A young, ambitious New York City matchmaker finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.

Critics say:

Marks the emergence of a new genre: the rom-con, not in the sense that it’s against the vicarious pleasures of flirting, seduction and finally finding true love, but that it’s painfully aware of the coldhearted calculation that so often lies beneath.

– Ann Hornaday, Washington Post

A seductive, smartly refreshed addition to an impossibly, perhaps irredeemably old-fashioned genre that was once a Hollywood staple.

Manohla Dargis, New York Times

It may make true love look all too Hollywood-easy in the end, but en route it’s still a Celine Song film.

A Photographic Memory

A Photographic Memory

Starring:
Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, Rachel Elizabeth Seed ; Directed by: Rachel Elizabeth Seed

Synopsis:

A filmmaker ventures into the archives of her photographer mother to construct a personal story of love, loss, and finding someone in the work they leave behind.

Critics say:

Beyond the wealth of resources at her disposal, it’s the consistently meta and thematically relevant formal ingenuity Seed shrewdly deploys that make her debut a sumptuous piece of nonfiction.

Carlos Aguilar, Variety

Seed’s elusive film is a haunting portrait—nimble in execution and startling in its poignancy—that introduces her mother to a new generation.
