Jurassic World Rebirth

Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, Directed by: Gareth Edwards

Synopsis:

Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.

Critics say:

“In a franchise built on the thrill of discovery, this latest entry offers only the comfort of the all-too-familiar, and the sinking feeling that some cinematic wonders are best left extinct.”

Peter Howell, Toronto Star

“Still, I’d rank “Rebirth” ahead of two or three previous chapters in a franchise whose sole consistency lies in a simple question: How have humans survived this long, even?”

Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

40 Acres
Starring: Danielle Deadwyler

40 Acres

Starring: Danielle Deadwyler, Michael Greyeyes, Kataem O’Connor, Milcania Diaz-Rojas  Directed by: R.T. Thorne

Synopsis:

After a series of plagues and wars leaves society in ruins, the Freemans are surviving — even thriving — on a farm in the middle of nowhere… so long as they repel the occasional raiding party. Former soldier Hailey (Danielle Deadwyler) and her partner Galen (Michael Greyeyes) fled the collapse along with their children, training them to fight (and, yes, kill). But now Hailey’s eldest Emanuel (Kataem O’Connor) is a young man, and when he meets a young woman (Milcania Diaz-Rojas) in the forest beyond the fence, his need for human contact could place the whole family in jeopardy.

Critics say:

“There’s a tense beauty to “40 Acres.” Deadwyler’s forceful energy fills the frame; through her rigid stature and her cleareyed speech, she lends power and humor to this lovingly stern mother.”

Robert Daniels, New York Times

“Thorne has made a resolute portrait of a woman who can’t break free of generational trauma. The same ancestor who founded this homestead left his own family behind in Georgia; that cold resolve is Hailey’s inheritance too.”

Kill The Jockey

Kill The Jockey

Starring:  Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, Úrsula Corberó, Directed by: Luis Ortega

Synopsis:

Once-renowned jockey Remo Manfredi (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart) has run out of track. Perpetually inebriated, hopped up on horse drugs, and in hock to a minor mafioso, Remo seems to have a death wish. His girlfriend and fellow jockey Abril (Úrsula Corberó) is pregnant, but more invested in the libidinous equestrian underworld than in their drab domestic existence. Remo’s only hope of getting out of debt and starting a new life is riding on Mishima, a thoroughbred specially imported from Japan for his next big race. When Mishima leaps over the fence, Remo winds up in the hospital with a life-threatening concussion. Hunted by the mob and replaced in Abril’s bed by the alluring Ana (Mariana Di Girolamo), Remo dons a disguise and finds himself as herself, wandering the streets of Buenos Aires in a striking mink coat and going by the name Dolores. A wild and surreal crime comedy from Luis Ortega (El Angel), Kill the Jockey explores the fluidity of identity, desire, and animal magnetism in a wholly original and unpredictable register.

Critics:

“The screenplay… is light on queer theory or even character motivation. But the comely cast, who contribute admirably athletic, physical performances across the board, have enough charisma and vigor to keep this not-especially-long film jaunty.”

Leslie Felperin, The Hollywood Reporter

“Awash with kooky gags and bolstered by the strange, soulful presence of leading man Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, it’s fun but flighty, liable to throw some viewers from the saddle.”
