Jonnie Stapleton ‘s FUNKY BUTT wines big! Louisiana Film Prize 2018 presents $50,000 check to winner of this year’s competition

“This was, by far, our most exciting year – more films entered in the competition, continued growth in the overall quality of filmmaking, and with a majority of female filmmakers among the 20 finalists,” said Gregory Kallenberg, Founder and Executive Director of the Film Prize Foundation. “It was also a year with our largest audience and our closest vote, so Jonnie Stapleton and his cast and crew from ‘Funky Butt’ should be very, very proud of this win.”

The 2018 Louisiana Film Prize includes filmmakers from 20 film finalists competing for a $50,000 grand prize. Well, that competitive spirit could also be found on the red carpet as everyone turned out for the Shreveport photographers and video crews looking to catch the next big winner(s) at this year’s fest!

SHORTS AND TO THE POINT: Travis Bible’s time travel short, EXIT STRATEGY won $50,000 at the Louisiana Film Prize. And there are multiple good reasons for that.

Bible scores with EXIT STRATEGY by remembering two very key requirements that make that film or a film like GROUNDHOG DAY a classic and so many other films a nice try at best: He gives us characters to care about and one character in particular who grows during the course of his impossible journey.

And that’s the balance I think men need to strike, even when it (as it so often does) go against every instinct to “fix things” and “problem solve.” We need to be ready to stand up and speak out when a loved one, or a friend like Rose or my other film fest friend, or in fact, a complete stranger needs us to do so. But we also, need to never assume we’ve got all of this gamed out, that we’ve got it down, we know the score.

FILM FESTIVAL NEWS: Founder Gregory Kallenberg of The Louisiana Film Prize announces 20 finalists vying for a $50,000 check and the jurors that will judge them

“The Film Prize has never seen this amazingly high level of work from all of the filmmakers,” said Gregory Kallenberg, Founder and Executive Director of the Film Prize Foundation. “It’s immediate and tangible proof that everyone can see on the big screen of the talent, both local to Louisiana and from all over the country, that is continuing to grow and to film here in Louisiana.”

FILMS GONE WILD: Matteo Servente ‘s WE GO ON’s: The 2017 Memphis Film Prize delivered the cinematic magic – and a big check for $10,000

Let’s face it, there is a lottery aspect to all of this, except YOU have quite a bit of influence over who gets that big-ass check. I feel like I am saying the same thing over and over again here, but the fact is that the culmination is a genuinely affecting moment that sweeps every single person involved up into it. And THAT is the magic of Film Prize.

THE GUEST COLUMN: Gregory Kallenberg on the Genesis, the Rarity, and the Real (Big) Money Opportunity that is the Louisiana Film Prize

as a final attempt to sway you to make a film or, in the least, come to Shreveport in October, please know why this competition was created. It was created for you, the filmmaker. I deeply wanted to give you a reason to practice your art and your passion. I wanted to give you a goal to strive for and for that goal to yield the creation of a film you would be proud of. To me, there are fewer and fewer places that celebrate your work in a way you deserve, and, to me, there is no better place — dare I say it? — on the planet to do this besides the Film Prize!
