The 2019 Harlem Film Festival kicked things off on their red carpet Thursday, May 16 with a Double Feature and some old school Hip Hop love…
“Each year, we are overwhelmed by the sheer number of films dealing with pressing issues from an unseen angle as well as those that are pushing boundaries culturally and socially. This year is no exception and our choices were from numerous films worthy of gala status,” said the Festival’s Program Director, Nasri Zacharia.

Lorenzo Roaché, Hi screens films in the following categories: Animation, Documentary, Narrative, Experimental, Music Video, Webisode, and Youth Film, for some of the most enthusiastic film audiences in New York City, as well as hosting a screenplay competition for aspiring and accomplished writers both locally and around the globe.
Roberta Durrant’s KROTOA was named Best Narrative Feature, with Daniel Peddle’s GARDEN OF THE PEACEFUL DRAGON taking the award for Best Documentary Feature. Ilker Savaskurt’s GROOM’S BLOCK won Best World Film (Narrative) and Steven McGregor’s SERVANT OR SLAVE took the prize for Best World Documentary.
“This year’s lineup is typically diverse, both in content and the filmmakers responsible for the films, bookended by personal profiles that hit close to home both because of their redemptive themes and because they get to the heart of what is the best in humanity,” said Harlem International Film Festival Program Director Nasri Zacharia, “In our 12th year, the festival will once again provide a forum for wonderful storytelling and exciting moments on the big screen created by talent all around the world.”
