FILM FESTIVAL NEWS: Leena Pendharkar ’s 20 WEEKS, BLUR CIRCLE, BOMB CITY, I HATE THE MAN: The 2017 Tallgrass Film Festival announces the 4 Stubbornly Independent Selections which will vie for a $5000 Grand Prize

“This year’s selections feature stories and characters that are both timely and easily relatable, while delivering a unique and bold take, leading to films that feel anything but familiar,” said Tallgrass Film Festival Programing Director Nick Pope. “Ultimately these are films about redemption and self-discovery in a world that can be messy and unpredictable, but also rewarding and surprising. We’re honored to be showcasing these stories to Wichita audiences.”

FILMS GONE WILD: FESTWORKS.COM covers regional fests and film discoveries that happen there. Do you even give a damn about that?

We don’t need more Clooney, Kidman, Lawrence, Adams, Streep, Cruise coverage. Monkeys can do that by this point. We need to find the new talent in film, and TV, and VR, etc. We need to give the new voices a forum to discuss their work. We need to help people find the golden film needles in the haystack of VOD titles we scroll past on Amazon and Netflix now.

Shorts and to the Point: Noam Osband ‘s THE RADICAL JEW

Precisely because I wanted it to be about extremism, I felt OK with Marzel being the only real voice in the film. Extremism is typified by a lack of nuance, and Marzel is not shy about his Manichean views of right and wrong. If I had wanted a nuanced portrayal of the town or the Israeli/ Palestinian conflict, I would have definitely needed more views. But that wasn’t my goal. Instead, I just wanted us to know how an ideologue perceives the world, and just letting the person speak is a way to do that.
