Hugo Sobelman’s SOUL KIDS, Mye Hoang’s CAT DADDIES: Oxford Film Festival 2022’s Opening Night red carpet!

The Oxford Film Festival returned with a new Interim Executive Director and Director of Programming to bring the world of film, as only it can, to Mississippi. Celebrating the Opening Night screening of Hugo Sobelman’s SOUL KIDS, and Mye Hoang’s festival favorite CAT DADDIES, the socially distanced red carpet included filmmakers, jury members, and representatives from the Oxford Film Festival programming team.

The 2019 Oxford Film Festival began with a Community Night screening of locally made films and then a special concert by documentary subjects Negro Terror to kick things off on Wednesday, February 6. The next night, John Stimpson’s GHOST LIGHT officially opened the fest with a screening (and special presentation of the Lisa Blount Memorial Acting Award to Roger Bart, one of the film’s stars) at the wonderful Gertrude Ford Performing Arts Center. Gregory Kallenberg kicks off the Film Prize. This is the way you “baptize” your filmmakers and give them a kick in the pants to start off a fest. He sets the tone of “We’re all in it together, filmmakers, jurors, staff, and film fans – all of us.” If you’re not onboard after Gregory’s opening remarks, the filmmakers first “pitches”, and the legendary Film Prize tequila toast, then it’s possible someone should check your pulse.

The 10 film finalists for the 3rd annual Memphis Film Prize (August 3-5) have been announced. The Film Prize’s top award of $10,000 cash – judged by both audience members and a group of judges comprised of filmmakers, film critics and journalists, will be awarded to a filmmaker following 3 days of screenings, filmmaker panels, and events in Memphis.

FILM FESTIVAL NEWS: The Oxford Film Festival issues Call For Entries with reduced fees for female filmmakers and performers with disabilities. Also, the Artist Vodka prize monies have increased!

Call for Entries open May 1, 2018, for the 2019 Oxford Film Festival, taking place in Oxford, Mississippi, February 6-9, 2019. The 16th edition of the festival will include the return of OFF’s screenplay competition with cash prizes, as well as a reduced submission fee incentive for female filmmakers.

The Lighthouse International Film Festival (LIFF) has announced the complete lineup for its ninth annual event, which will take place June 8-11, 2017 on Long Beach Island, New Jersey. The festival will open with Sam Voutas’ acclaimed KING OF PEKING, a rousing Beijing-set love letter to cinema that brought cheering audiences to their feet at Tribeca 2017.
