Vision Films acquired North American VOD/DVD rights to the Adah Edache Obekpa’s The American King, and will release it on all major streaming and cable platforms in the U.S. and Canada on January 28, 2022 coinciding with a 5-city theatrical release, and on DVD on February 28.
The feature, shot on location in Los Angeles and Nigeria, which won awards at the Harlem International Film Festival, Los Angeles Lift Off Film Festival, Charlotte Black Film Festival, and the 2nd Line Film Festival, addresses poignant multicultural, political, societal, and global issues including the 1619 Project, BLM, Africa, Nollywood, Black history and American history. No holds are barred or are off limits as racial and gender stereotypes, American politics, US history, and international affair norms are equally lampooned, all while juxtaposed with the beauty and diversity of a myriad of African cultures.
Written and directed by Obekpa, and starring Senegalese-American singing star Akon (Road To Redemption, Black November, American Heist), The American King begins when a mysterious High Priestess arrives in this country to fulfill a 400-year-old prophecy, she chooses a troublemaking American (Akon) to become the new King of Africa. While he and his friends jet off and bring their street smarts and antics to a new international level of mischief, the US government unravels one of the most guarded secrets about the true identity of the “founding fathers” of the United States. With great power comes great responsibility. Can the new king save his country and Make Africa Great Again?
The film also stars Andrew Howard (Limitless), Nick Moran (Harry Porter and the Deathly Hallows, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), Massi Furlan (Jumanji: The Next Level), Eyninna Nwigwe (Black November), Nse Ikpe-Etim (Fifty), Nathin Butler (Westworld). Producers are Joan McCarthy and Adah Edah Obekpa.
Lise Romanoff, CEO and Managing Director of Vision Films says, “The American King is a cross between Coming to America and Black Panther, and while this movie is delivered with comedy it depicts a very powerful commentary about the divisiveness and double standards in today’s society. We know audiences will have a good laugh and enjoy the very talented cast.”
The deal was negotiated with Joan McCarthy of Ihotu Films, who added, “It’s a funny, thought provoking and full of heart film, and Vision Films picked up on right away. We could not be more thrilled to have a partner like them to help introduce The American King to audiences.”
